The Zainer, a tool for restoring bare land?

KEY MESSAGES

The zainer is a technology designed to restore bare land by digging zaï holes. Testing of the first prototype revealed four key messages:

• The motorized zaï, known as the zainer, performs less well technically than the other technologies tested¹.
• The zainer is less economically viable than the other tools¹, regardless of the economic model chosen (purchase, rental), due to its high fuel consumption and low yield.
• Producers find the zainer difficult to use due to the technical breakdowns observed.
• The zainer needs to be technically adapted to better meet the needs of rural producers.
